Sleep???

Why can't I ever be blessed with a baby that sleeps well. I am just doomed. Here is my night last night.

10:30pm Feed Chase
11-11:30pm Get a few things done and get ready for bed (make sure Chase is really going to stay sleep)
11:30pm head hits pillow
1:00 am Feed Chase
1:15 am Ken wakes me up coughing and leaving the room (I think the lasagna he had last night gave him some nasty heartburn and he aspirated a little).
????am Feed Chase and change his diaper
2:30 am Ken returns to bed
???? am Feed Chase
3:00am Feed Chase (wake a bit more from my dazed state and realize this is the 4th time I have fed him and it is only 3)
3:30 am Chase screaming--diaper recently changed, recently fed, bundled up, WHY ARE YOU AWAKE AND CRYING? Caden comes into the room and wants to sleep in my bed and starts screaming when I tell him he can't. I take Caden back to bed, Ken takes Chase downstairs.
3:45am Caden is crying in his room. I go in to see what is wrong. I never find out, but he is calmed by a drink of water.
3:55am Caden is crying again. He says he needs a kleenex to wipe his tears. I give him another drink and then go in the bathroom and clean up my nasty toe (it is infected..no idea how it got that way) and wait to make sure Caden isn't going to wake up.
4:05am Caden wakes up again!! I lay in bed and wonder what is wrong with that kid. I hope he will just go back to sleep on his own...knowing there is no way this will happen. Ken ends up coming up and taking care of him.
6:30am Ken brings Chase in and I feed him.
7:00am The other three munchkins wake up and I wish I had a snooze button (only instead of another 5 minutes it would give me another hour)
7:10am I hear Grandma Bassett talking to kids. Good, maybe I can get a little more sleep.
7:15am Someone is crying.
7:30am I hear the kids fighting
7:45 Jordan is crying and Kailyn is saying "I'm sorry."
8:00am The kids are in Grandma's room and I can tell Grandma is not with them. I give up and get up for the day.

Sunday

Chase got ready for church by taking a shower with Dad. He hated it. He is the first of our kids to hate baths and showers. All of the other kids would get upset when you undressed them, but once in the water they would quit crying, and be fascinated by the water.

He looks like he is ok here but I think he was just taking a breather before starting up again.

What Chase really thought of the shower.

Dressed and ready for church.

Pictures of the kids.

We survived church. Here is Chase chilling after church.

2 weeks

Chase is already 2 weeks old, although it feels like forever ago that I was in the hospital having him.

This week was a bit long with Ken working long hours that kept him away most of the day, through dinner, and bedtime (the time of the day I want him around the most, especially with a new baby). I am feeling pretty good today. Unfortunately, I ended up developing mastitis on Friday. It came on like a ton of bricks. Luckily, I was able to get on antibiotics quick and feel much better today. Ken actually had today off (and tomorrow. It's been a long time since he has gone to church with us). We decided to take advantage of his day off and we went up to Michigan to the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum. The kids had a lot of fun. Jordan was begging to stay longer when we told her it was time to go.

We spent the rest of the day chilling at home, Ken and I reading our respective books and the kids played. We then went to Pizza Hut for dinner, thanks to Reed and Carrisa who sent us a gift card for Christmas.

Nothing

So you may be thinking this is a picture of nothing. Well, that is what was coming out of our faucet this morning--nothing! We had absolutely NO hot water. At first we were a bit worried that it was a burst pipe. Thank goodness it wasn't. We were lucky it was only frozen pipes. We did discover another thing about our house. The wire plugged into the light switch in our crawl space turns out to be a wire that warms the pipes. Great idea, just wish we would have known about it earlier. We were lucky it wasn't a burst pipe and that it was only one day of having to boil water to take a shower (Girls' Camp all over again).

And this picture shows how Caden does his chore when there is a new baby in the house and I am feeding Chase.

A Shrinking Baby

Chase went in for a check up on Thursday. The nurse took him and weighed him--4lbs 5oz (he weighed 6lbs 5oz at birth). She wasn't sure she was using the scale right (it is an old fashioned one) so she asked the other nurse to help her. The other nurse tried and casually says, "yeah, looks like 4lbs 5oz." I couldn't believe that they actually thought he was that light, especially considering his birth weight. The first nurse than measures his length and got 17 1/4" (he was 20 1/4 at birth). Any red flags here anyone? Anybody worried? Not the nurse, who casually/offhandedly mentions something about how babies lose after birth. What?!?! OK, I know the weight is wrong but figured the doctor (actually, I saw the nurse practitioner) would catch that, but shrinking in height? Really?!? I can't believe she thought that was ok. Well, turns out that Chase is actually weighing in at 6lbs 6oz and about the same length as at birth.

I can't believe Chase has already been home for a week and we haven't even reached his actual due date yet. He has been a pretty good baby so far, but I suppose most babies are for the first week or two. He is definitely starting to find his lungs. Tonight he was very fussy for some reason. This made dinner, baths, and bedtime a little crazy (Ken was at work all day today).

Caden seems to be adjusting ok to Chase now/so far. Poor guy got 4 shots the day before I had Chase, got his sleeping schedule all messed up while I was in the hospital and the first few days home, caught a cold, and is now cutting a molar. He has started to really fight naps and bedtimes. I think he his afraid he will miss out on something. This morning he appeared in my room at 6:15am (of course I had just gotten Chase to settle down after he had been awake on and off for the last hour and a half).

Jordan has not done so well with the new baby. She doesn't do well with change. She has been extremely emotional lately and gets frustrated very easily. She has become a bit pickier about how things are done (like now when she eats for some reason she has to be pushed up to the table so tight that I don't know how she breaths, and the plate has to be equidistant from her elbows on the table, but, sadly, she can't move the plate or her elbows, it has to be her chair that moves).

Kailyn seems to be doing great with Chase. She does get a bit flustered when he is crying and won't take his pacifier. She was very excited to take pictures to school on Friday to show off pictures of her new little brother.

I am doing fine. The transition so far has not been so bad. This next week will really test me, though, as Ken will work most of the week. I was very lucky to get help the first few days home from the hospital. Thank you so much to Kim and Renae who took my kids those first few days so I could catch up on sleep!! I have also been so blessed to have people from church bringing in meals. It has helped so much! Nursing is not so fun right now. I am just so thankful that I haven't gotten an infection, yet. Surprised, but thankful.

Caden was laying next to Chase rubbing his back, so cute. Of course when he saw the camera he had to get up and pose.

Bath Time and Helpers

So Chase is finding his lungs. He hates getting his diaper changed, and makes it known loud and clear. We learned today that he also hates baths.

Before his bath. Look at that long hair over his ears.

His hair is long in the back, too.
Of course everyone wanted to help and watch.

All done.

After his bath, his hair dried into one big puff.

One would think that since this is my 4th baby nursing would be second nature. Unfortunately, things have been a bit rocky. Here is Kailyn helping feed Chase.

Jordan reading a story to Chase.

Well Child Checks

So last Thursday Caden and Jordan had their well child checks. We had problems with our last pediatrician always billing us wrong (and insurance refusing to cover the bills since they weren't billed correctly), so I decided to change offices. The new doctor seems OK. We did learn that the last pediatrician had messed up on both Caden's and Jordan's shots (Caden's were really bad). So they both got shots and have to go back in 6 months for more.

CADEN

Caden is in the 50th percentile for height and 75th for weight. Everything else looked great. Caden has a funny little quirk, every time something is stuck in is right ear he starts coughing.

When it came time for his shots he got really excited.
Caden: "Mommy, I'm getting a shot, huh?" (with a cheerful happy little face)
Me: "Yes. They might hurt a little cause they will poke you." (trying to get him ready 'cuz he obviously has no idea what is coming)
Doctor gives him his first shot and Caden gets a look of shock on his face.
Caden: "I'm going to get a shot." (still happy but not quite so chipper)
Doctor gives second shot. Caden begins to cry.
No more happy Caden. He cries through the next 2 shots.
I tell him he is all done.
Caden stops crying, wipes his tears away (LOOVE watching him wipe his tears--so deliberate, so cute) and happily states, "I'm all done."

JORDAN

Jordan was in the 97th percentile for both height and weight (I was a bit surprised 'cuz she has never been this high before).

She was very afraid for her shots, I think mostly because of a little pep talk from Kailyn (the girl that is deathly afraid of shots--yeah not the person that one should talk to before getting shots. "It's going to hurt a little, but you can be brave and . . ."). Jordan hid behind me the whole time Caden was getting his shots, and even before the shots began she was asking "Caden will get his shots and then we will go home and eat lunch, right?" Nice try (notice how she doesn't mention anything about getting her shots). It was really a struggle to get her arm ready, she was quite hysterical. She seemed a bit surprised after the shot. Not as bad as she was expecting.
